Privacy notice

What we keep

• Your account: your email address, your password (scrambled, so nobody can read it, not even us), your display name if you chose one, and your language.
• Your practice: the tickets you start, what you do in the practice simulator, the hints you use, and the feedback you get.
• Security records: to protect the site from attacks, our server keeps a short record of each visit (your internet address, the page and the time) for 14 days. If a password is typed wrongly, a counter is kept for 15 minutes, and new accounts made from each internet connection are counted for one hour, to stop fake sign-ups.

We don't ask for your real name, phone number, age, school or location. Anything you type as a password inside the practice simulator is checked and then thrown away: it is never stored.

Why we keep it

To let you log in, save your progress, check your work and give you feedback, and keep the site safe. We may also look at practice records to make the tickets and feedback better, for example to see which mistakes are common.

Who can see it

Only the small team that runs Mashq. Other learners never see your details or your work. We don't use advertising, analytics or tracking services, and we never sell or give your data to anyone else.

Where it's stored

Your data is stored on a server we rent from Contabo in Germany. Everything sent between your device and Mashq is encrypted (HTTPS).

Cookies

Mashq uses two small cookies, both needed for the site to work: one keeps you logged in, and one protects forms from being sent by other websites. There are no tracking or advertising cookies.

How long we keep it

Your account and practice records are kept until you delete your account. Security records are deleted after 14 days. We keep backups for 14 days in case something goes wrong, so after you delete your account, a copy may remain in a backup for up to 14 more days before it disappears too. A copy of each night's backup is also kept in Mashq's own Google Drive for the same 14 days. It is locked with a secret key (encrypted) before it leaves our server, so Google can't read it.

Your choices

• See and change your details, or change your password, on your account page.
• Delete your account at any time from the account page. Your account and all your practice are removed straight away.

Young learners

Mashq is made for young people. If you are under 13, please ask a parent or guardian to help you sign up. Whatever your age, it's a good idea to tell a parent, guardian or teacher that you're practising on Mashq.
